DHS Announces Registration Process for Temporary Protected Status for Ukraine and Sudan

If you come from Ukraine or Sudan and are currently in the US, it’s essential to keep updated on the latest announcements from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). On April 18, 2022, DHS shared information on how to register for a Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Previously, Alejandro N. Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, announced the 18-month designation for Sudan and Ukraine.

The registration process started on April 19, 2022. If you’re interested in requesting TPS under Sudan or Ukraine, you must apply.

Know if you’re eligible under the Ukraine designation

To be eligible for a TPS, you must demonstrate your continuous residence in the US since April 11, 2022, with a continuous physical presence since the designation date in the Federal Register notice. The USCIS has estimated that 59,600 individuals currently in the US may be eligible for a Temporary Protected Status under the designation of Ukraine.

Ukrainian nationals outside the US aren’t eligible under the designation and cannot relocate to the US in the coming weeks. Instead, they’re encouraged to apply for a visa or find other legal pathways at a US consulate in other countries.

Eligibility under the Sudan designation

For the Sudan designation, you must demonstrate continuous residence in the US since March 1, 2022, with a continuous physical presence here since the designation date in the Federal Register notice. If you arrived in the US after March 1, 2022, you’re not eligible for TPS under the designation, and you may be subject to removal if you don’t have other authorization to be in the US.

The USCIS has estimated 3,090 individuals to be eligible for TPS under the designation of Sudan, including around 2,390 newly eligible individuals and an estimated 700 current TPS Sudan beneficiaries whose documentation has been extended automatically under court orders through at least December 31, 2022. They must file a new application for Temporary Protected Status under the new Sudan designation to maintain protection if court injunctions are removed.
